Neurological Physiotherapy & Outcomes

What is neurological physiotherapy?

Neurological physiotherapy (neuro physio) is specialist rehabilitation designed for conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. It focuses on restoring movement, improving balance and coordination, rebuilding strength and supporting meaningful functional independence following neurological injury or illness. Our approach is structured, evidence-based and tailored to the individual, helping translate rehabilitation into real-world progress.

A neurological physiotherapist assesses and treats movement difficulties caused by conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. At NeuroPhysio, we look at areas such as balance, coordination, strength, sensation, muscle tone, fatigue and functional movement to understand what is limiting everyday activity.

From there, we develop a personalised rehabilitation programme built around meaningful goals. This might include improving walking, transfers, arm and hand function, reducing falls risk or supporting a return to work, exercise or other valued activities. Treatment may take place in clinic, at home or in the community, with the aim of making sure progress carries over into real life.

We provide specialist neuro rehabilitation for individuals living with:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Acquired brain injury (ABI)
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Functional neurological disorder (FND)
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Vestibular disorders including BPPV and central dizziness

If you are unsure whether neurological physiotherapy is appropriate, we are happy to discuss your situation.

Neurological rehabilitation can support improvements in:

  • Balance problems and falls
  • Walking and gait difficulties
  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Spasticity and muscle stiffness
  • Reduced hand and upper limb function
  • Fatigue linked to neurological conditions
  • Dizziness and vestibular symptoms
  • Reduced coordination

Treatment is always goal-led and focused on practical outcomes that matter in everyday life.

Yes. Recovery does not always stop after the early phase. The nervous system retains capacity for adaptation when rehabilitation is specific, repetitive and progressive.

We regularly work with individuals for months or years after injury to improve function, increase independence and build confidence in daily activities.

The short answer is ‘yes’! Physiotherapy can be highly effective in improving balance problems, particularly when they are linked to a neurological condition such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury or vestibular disorders.

Balance is a complex skill involving the brain, inner ear (vestibular system), vision, muscle strength and coordination. When one or more of these systems is affected, it can lead to unsteadiness, dizziness or an increased risk of falls. Specialist neurological physiotherapy focuses on identifying the specific cause of balance difficulty and targeting it through structured, evidence-based rehabilitation.

Yes, physiotherapy can be very effective in treating dizziness, particularly when symptoms are linked to the vestibular system (the balance system in the inner ear) or to neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis or concussion.

Dizziness may present as vertigo (a spinning sensation), unsteadiness, light-headedness or motion sensitivity. It can significantly affect confidence, walking, driving and daily activities. Specialist neurological physiotherapy, particularly vestibular rehabilitation, is designed to identify the underlying cause of dizziness and target it with structured treatment.

At NeuroPhysio, we have specialist training in vestibular rehab and carry out a detailed assessment to determine whether symptoms are related to conditions such as:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Central vestibular dysfunction
  • Post-concussion syndrome
  • Vestibular migraine
  • Neurological balance disorders

Rehabilitation timelines vary depending on the condition, severity and stage of recovery. Some individuals benefit from short-term targeted input, while others require longer-term structured neuro rehabilitation.

Following assessment, we provide clear, realistic guidance and review progress regularly to ensure therapy remains purposeful and outcome driven.

Outcomes are personalised but may include:

  • Safer, more efficient walking
  • Greater independence with transfers
  • Improved upper limb use
  • Reduced falls risk
  • Increased endurance and confidence
  • Return to work, leisure activities or adaptive sport

Our focus is always on meaningful, measurable progress.

Process & Practical Questions

Where are you located and what areas do you cover?

Our neuro physio team currently provide home visits in the south of England, including in Herts, Essex, Beds, Bucks, Northants, North London, East London, Dorset, Hampshire and southern Wiltshire.

We also offer clinic appointments in Hertford (concussion and vestibular rehabilitation) and our regional rehab service in Essex (all neurological conditions). Our Essex clinic is based at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford and includes a large treatment room, gym space and access to adaptive sports courts.

Treatment is always tailored to your individual needs, goals and stage of recovery. Depending on your assessment, this may include hands-on treatment, strength and balance training, gait re-education, upper limb rehabilitation, tone and spasticity management, and advice on splints, orthotics or assistive equipment.

We also use rehabilitation technology where appropriate, including electrical stimulation, surface EMG, NeuroFlex and Saebo products, alongside intensive rehabilitation programmes and graded return to exercise, sport or other meaningful activities. Whatever approach we use, the aim is the same: to improve function, confidence and independence in everyday life.

Our therapy team are available to contact Monday to Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Each of our therapists works slightly different hours, and we can often accommodate consultations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., though this is location dependent.

For your neurological physiotherapy appointment, we recommend bringing:

  • Any relevant medical letters or reports (e.g. consultant summaries, scan results, discharge notes)
  • A list of current medication
  • Details of any previous rehabilitation or therapy
  • Your glasses or hearing aids if you use them
  • Any mobility aids, splints or orthotics you currently wear

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows movement and appropriate footwear for walking assessment, as we may assess balance, gait and functional tasks. If a family member, carer or case manager is involved in your rehabilitation, they are welcome to attend. This can help ensure goals, expectations and next steps are clearly understood.

Bringing this information allows us to complete a thorough neurological assessment and design a structured, personalised rehabilitation plan from your very first session.

Yes, we do, including wheelchair accessible toilet facilities.

We require 48 hours’ notice of any cancellation for neurological physiotherapy consultations. Failure to do so may result in the full fee being charged, inclusive of the allocated travel time (if applicable). Where applied, mileage will only be charged when journeys have commenced.

Your initial appointment includes a detailed neurological assessment covering movement, balance, strength, coordination and functional tasks. We also take time to understand your goals, lifestyle and priorities.

You will leave with a clear outline of recommended treatment, proposed frequency and structured next steps.

No. You are welcome to self-refer directly. We also accept referrals from consultants, GPs, case managers, solicitors and other healthcare professionals.

If you are unsure, our team can advise you on the most appropriate route.

Our physiotherapists each manage their own diary to ensure that we are able to remain punctual. We can however be contacted via hello@physio4you.co.uk or on 0800 915 3288 to make an enquiry. You will then be put in direct contact with the most suitable member of the NeuroPhysio team who will answer any questions that you have and arrange the initial appointment.

The frequency of neurological physiotherapy varies depending on your individual needs. Recommendations are based on factors such as your diagnosis, medical history, current symptoms, stage of recovery and personal rehabilitation goals.

Some people benefit from more intensive neuro rehabilitation over a defined period, particularly in the early stages following stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury. Others may require ongoing neurological physiotherapy at a lower frequency to maintain progress, manage symptoms or support long-term independence.

Following your assessment, we will discuss a structured treatment plan and agree on a schedule that is clinically appropriate and aligned with your goals. Frequency is always reviewed regularly to ensure your neuro rehabilitation remains purposeful and effective.

We generally plan for one or two hours for a neuro physio assessment, and one hour for a follow up consultation. Your treating physio will always agree the time in advance and inform you of the cost.
